John Henry Newman answers Calvinist attack (before papal visit)

Fascinating.

Next month Pope Benedict XVI will visit the United Kingdom. Since the first announcement of the papal visit various groups and cohorts at enmity with the Catholic Church have organized to protest and disfigure the appearance of the pontiff, whom many are now calling the ‘Pope of Christian Unity’. I look for such attacks to multiply, but I also believe conversions will occur…

During his visit the Pope will beatify Cardinal John Henry Newman. According to this same source, his canonisation will make Newman the first English person to have lived since the 17th century (Protestant Reformation) to be declared a saint. Newman was a Church of England convert to Catholicism who before his conversion was convinced that Rome had corrupted the primitive Christian faith…

The following attack on the Church and papacy found its way into my e-mail box today. Having little knowledge of the history of Calvinism, or for that matter, of John Henry Newman, I found myself reading up on both this evening. As I read on over Newman’s ‘An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine’ I realized that the soon-to-be-blessed was perfectly explaining  the eternal relevance of the Catholic Church in the world of souls today and throughout history, as opposed to both religious and non-religious groups doomed attempt(s) at publicly declaring her corruption and irrelevance.

Blessed Newman is an example of why such declarations will eventually fall away into ruin, because he himself came to realize that despite the fallen nature of her members, the world, and of course, the machinations of the Devil, all that the Church believes and teaches in doctrine and worship of God for the sake of souls and their salvation is predicated on ‘unchanging truth….’ From the beginning, throughout history, onto the Judgement, and fully into eternity, Jesus Christ remains the same yesterday, today, and forever: He is unchanging truth. He, (as with the church he founded), is the stone the builder’s are rejecting; He has promised to remain with her even to the end of the world…

And that too, is unchanging truth.

I encourage you to view the full 8-minute video, followed by the timely reply from Cardinal Newman.

This from a site called Shofar Ministries:

Friends in about 4 weeks time Pope Benedict XVI will arrive in the UK on a 4 day visit. Many evangelicals believe the Roman Catholic religion is Christian. They could not be more wrong.

I believe this visit is another evidence of God’s judgement on us for turning away from his truth over the last 50 years.

Whilst I do believe there are many true believers within the RCC they must leave before Rome is judged by God in the coming days. However when one studies the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church it becomes obvious that the Roman way of salvation is not the same as the bible’s way. They may use the same terms such as “born again” but they do not mean the same as evangelical believers.

For evidence of Rome’s false gospel please watch this video and do not be deceived by those who tell you Rome has changed. She has not changed.

Cardinal Newman:

“It is true, there have been seasons when, from the operation of external or internal causes, the Church has been thrown into what was almost a state of deliquium; but her wonderful revivals, while the world was triumphing over her, is a further evidence of the absence of corruption in the system of doctrine and worship into which she has developed. If corruption be an incipient disorganisation, surely an abrupt and absolute recurrence to the former state of vigour, after an interval, is even less conceivable than a corruption that is permanent. Now this is the case with the revivals I speak of. After violent exertion men are exhausted and fall asleep; they awake the same as before, refreshed by the temporary cessation of their activity; and such has been the slumber and such the restoration of the Church. She pauses in her course, and almost suspends her functions; she rises again, and she is herself once more; all things are in their place and ready for action. Doctrine is where it was, and usage, and precedence, and principle, and policy; there may be changes, but they are consolidations or adaptations; all is unequivocal and determinate, with an identity which there is no disputing. Indeed it is one of the most popular charges against the Catholic Church at this very time, that she is “incorrigible;” change she cannot, if we listen to St. Athanasius or St. Leo; change she never will, if we believe the controversialist or alarmist of the present day.”

In 1991, Newman was proclaimed “Venerable” by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. His beatification is expected to be officially proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to the UK on 19 September 2010.[5]

Outrage! — Catholic school girl who refused headscarf for mosque trip labelled a truant

NOTICE: You are invited to join the conversation on this post over on Catholic Truth/Scotland.

‘Whilst I may not require you to pay for this I must require your child to participate…’

From UK Mail Online:

A Roman Catholic schoolgirl has been labelled a truant after she refused to wear a headscarf during a compulsory trip to a mosque.

Amy Owen, 14, and fellow girl pupils at a Catholic secondary school were told to cover their heads and wear trousers or leggings out of respect for their Muslim hosts.

But when her mother objected, saying she did not want her daughter to ‘dress as a Muslim’, she received a sternly worded warning letter from the headmaster saying she had no choice.

Michelle Davies’ daughter Amy Owen was ordered to wear a headscarf and trousers or leggings for a school trip to a mosque

Peter Lee, head of Ellesmere Port Catholic High School in Cheshire, informed her that the local diocese ‘requires’ pupils to have an understanding of other religions.

In the letter – with words in block capitals and underlined – Mr Lee said the visit was ‘as compulsory as a geography field trip’.

He added: ‘There are two reasons for these visits. One is that the scheme of work in religious studies REQUIRES children to have knowledge and understanding of other world religions.

‘The second is that the school is REQUIRED to promote tolerance respect and understanding. This is known as community cohesion.

‘A failure to do this could result in an unwelcome inspection judgement. None of us would relish that.

‘Whilst I may not require you to pay for this I must require your child to participate.’

Amy’s mother Michelle Davies refused to back down and, after being told no teachers would be back at school to keep an eye on her daughter, she kept her at home, citing religious objections – as did as many as ten other families.

Yesterday, after the school acted on its threat to class Amy’s absence as truancy, Miss Davies accused it of discriminating against Christian pupils.

‘It’s like they’re putting a gun to your head – either you go to a mosque, or you’re marked down as an unauthorised absence on your record – that’s it no two ways about it,’ the 34-year-old said.

‘It’s like they are saying she is playing truant for not wearing a head scarf. If the trip had been without the leggings and the headscarf, that would have been fine but I wasn’t having my daughter dressed in the Muslim way.

‘She’s proud of her school uniform and what it represents and she should be able to wear it like she would on any normal school trip.

The trip to the mosque was organised so that students could ‘deepen their understanding and broaden their knowledge’ of Islam

‘She likes to learn, she takes history and she is really interested in it, she wants to learn, but she can do that her classroom without changing the way she dresses.

‘I even did some research on the internet about non-Muslims attending mosques and it says you don’t have to adhere to the dress code.

‘I also fail to see how a three-hour trip to a mosque is of any educational value to a Catholic when she can learn about the Muslim faith in the classroom.

‘I can guarantee that if there were ten Muslim girls coming to our school it would adhere to what they wanted, because that’s their faith, their religion, their dress code.’

Parents were asked to make a £3 payment towards the Year 9 trip to the Al Rahma Mosque in Liverpool last month, and an 11-point dress and behaviour code from the mosque was circulated.

Miss Davies, a home help, of Ellesmere Port, added: ‘There are some parts of religious education lessons that children who are Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t have to attend because that’s part of their religion, and the fact is Amy is Catholic and not a Muslim.’

Last year, Ofsted praised the school’s ‘caring Catholic ethos’ but said it needed to do more ‘to enhance wider cultural development’.

The school says the trip was an exciting and unique opportunity for students

Pope assassination alert ahead of his UK visit

HOSPITAL security chiefs in the Midlands have been put on alert for an assassination attempt on the Pope.

Benedict XVI is expected to visit Coventry and Birmingham when he makes his first historic visit to Britain in September.

Now security bosses at Birmingham City Hospital have revealed they would deal with any assassination attempt because of their expertise in dealing with bullet injuries because of gang crime.

The 82-year-old Pope is due to carry out the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman while in the Midlands for only the second Papal visit to this country since Henry VIII broke with Rome.

Although the location of the saint-making ceremony and the Catholic leader’s tour are still secret, it now looks certain that he will visit Coventry, and probably the Second City, too.

But the Pontiff, who has recently spoken out against gay marriage, abortion rights and contraception, may attract street protests during his appearance.

Medical contingency plans and practice exercises are already taking place, with scenarios including a shooting or riots, according to Peter Finch, head of security at City Hospital in Winson Green.

Mr Finch, who used to protect the Queen and her family while working in the RAF’s VIP counter intelligence and terrorism units, said: “The Pope’s visit has only just been announced.

“But we have known for some time about the Pope going to Coventry and he is expected to come to Birmingham, too.

‘‘We have to make contingency plans in case if anything happens and he is injured.

“The Pope is royalty. We have had two assassination attempts on Popes in the past four or five years. He is a real target.

“If anything happens to him, we will have hundreds of press camped outside the hospital and that is before the Catholics turn up.

“Police can shut off all the mobile phone system so only designated phones can be used if we had a significant issue restricting communications.”

The 51-year-old former Flight Lieutenant and Provost Officer said emergency exercises were being stepped up over coming months at the hospital in preparation for the visit.

A draft itinerary for the Pope’s trip is understood to include Coventry, Birmingham, London, Edinburgh and Oxford but final details are yet to be confirmed by the Vatican.

The head of the Catholic Church has always been a highly protected figure, after previous attempts on his life.

Mock Vestment: First U.K. Catholic Woman Priest — video

‘Can wrong be right?’

Body Language — Wringing hands; rubbing fingers: Nervousness; anxiety; uncertainty. Subconscious scrubbing away sin…

Catholic Truth Scotland has its combox open on the subject of their first U.K. Woman Priest. Here’s one insightful comment I snatched off the blog from Stuart:

“This organization claims that in the early Church, deaconesses were ordained well have a look at this quote ladies….

“Similarly, in regard to the deaconesses, as with all who are enrolled in the register, the same procedure is to be observed. We have made mention of the deaconesses, who have been enrolled in this position, although, not having been in any way ordained, they are certainly to be numbered among the laity” (Council of Nicea. Canon 19 [A.D. 325]).””
