Ghosts: I’ve had a cataleptic somnambulism, you probably have too — The Seven Kinds of Ghosts

EDITOR:

To bury the dead is a corporal act of mercy. It’s also a spiritual act of mercy to pray for the souls of the dead; those we know and love, as well as those forgotten souls who have no one to pray for them. The object of such prayer, of course, is not to contact the dead, but instead to pray for their entrance into the eternal beatitude of God—Heaven.

Before my wife’s Grandmother passed away, her husband had died. And she use to tell us that following her husband’s death, he appeared to her and comforted her in the living room of their home…

It shouldn’t have surprised me then, that on the night that my wife’s grandmother died in the hospital, I was awakened by the passing presence of a spirit through the bedroom my wife and I slept in that night. We were in my wife’s Grandparents bedroom:

I sat straight up in the bed, and thought to myself, ‘Oh, no, she’s died…’ And the phone rang in the dark moments later.

The hospital confirmed what I already knew…

This account of mine, as you’ll learn within the following article, is a ‘common experience many have of which can be described in technical jargon as a cataleptic somnambulism. a sensed or visual phantasmic perception. And I have no doubt that many who’ll read this post have had the same, or similar visitation experiences. Or perhaps, knows someone who has.

While such visitations appear true, without forgetting that (if authentic) they are a gift of God for the grieving, and call to prayer, there still remains the reality of powerful forces of an evil nature at the level of spirits. It’s not a good thing to be messing around with spiritism, in fact, it can be outright dangerous to both body and soul.

As the Halloween season approaches, I’ve decided to share this great article as both a spiritual warfare aid and call to remember the dead in your prayers. God is spirit, and we must worship in spirit and truth, and if you’re praying properly you yourself can be a great aid to both those you love and so too those wandering forgotten souls who have none to pray for them. Note: The most powerful prayer on behalf of souls on earth is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. So, I encourage you this upcoming All Souls Day , November 2nd, 2010, to visit any Catholic Church for the purpose of helping souls attain Heaven… Links for personal prayers will be found at the end of the page following the article… jme

Seven Kinds of Ghosts (Revised)
by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

I. What the Bible Says about Ghosts

A. Seeking out Ghosts

We begin this discussion with an examination of some of the Scripture verses that give us clues on this subject.

Scripture does not have much to say about this and certainly God has made it clear that this is an area we are not to seek out:

*Lev. 19:31 tells us to not turn to mediums or to seek out spiritists.

*Lev. 20:6, 27 equates the seeking out of mediums with prostitution (doing so is an act of infidelity to God that is not just adultery, but involves a prurient interest in the occult things equating it with prostitution — a medium also is “hired” which is also an image of prostitution).

*Deut. 18:10-11 Gives a whole list of prohibitions involving the occult and spirit world.

Whatever Ghosts are or are not, it is clear that we are not to seek them out in any way.

B. What do We Know About Ghosts?

1. Composition of Ghosts

*What are ghosts composed of? Well, we have a little hint of that in Luke 24:39 where the Resurrected Jesus is mistaken for a ghost. Jesus says “a ghost does not have flesh and bones”.

Thus we can know that whatever ghosts are, they are spiritual beings without flesh and bones.

2. Ghostly Visitations during Sleep

*Is there an example of a ghostly visitation during sleep? Job 4:15 “A spirit glided by my face and the hair on my body stood on end”

This “spirit” was most probably an angel, but it does give us a clue of the human experience of meeting a spiritual entity and that such entities can and do come to us in that vulnerable time of twilight and dreams. This account is very close to the common experience many have of which can be described in technical jargon as a cataleptic somnambulism with a sensed or visual phantasmic perception.

Also in 2 Maccabees 15:12-16 is a passage about a dream (vision) of the Jewish leader Maccabeus. In this dream the ghosts of the high priest Onias and the great prophet Jeremiah appeared to him and encouraged him concerning the battle to come.

Maccabeus told this dream to his men which encourage his men greatly. Maccabeus and his men afterward defeated blasphemous Nicanor and his men who thought to destroy the Jewish people.

3. Human spirits in Ghostly Form?

*Can a human being’s spirit be transported? We know from accounts of Padre Pio that bi-location is possible, but those are yet unverified — But what about in Scripture. Well, there are a couple of verses that indicate this. One is in Rev. 21:10 (17:3) where John was “carried away in the spirit”. But the most direct notion of this is in 2 Corinthians 12:2 “I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know — God knows.”

From this we know it is possible for man’s spirit to be apart from even his living body at God’s discretion. In the occult world this is called Astral Projection.

*Can a person’s body be transported spiritually? Acts 8:39, after Philip was miraculously running up along the chariot of the Ethiopian, and after Philip baptized him, Philip then disappeared. “When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again…”

This episode appears to be a bodily transport in the spirit, but I suppose it could also be a corporeal bi-location too. Who knows?

4. Other examples of ghostly visitations

*1 Samuel 28 The Witch of Endor. In this story Saul goes to a medium asking her to contact the dead Samuel. She apparently succeeds and Saul talks with Samuel and Samuel prophecies. The Scripture specifically states that “Samuel said”. There is no indication at all that this was a demonic impostor.

*Sirach 46:20. Again Samuel prophecies from the grave.

*The Transfiguration Matt 17:2 Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus to Peter, James, and John

*The Rich Man and Lazarus Luke 16:19-31 In verse 25 Abraham says that there is a great chasm between him and the Rich Man that cannot be crossed. This is not talking about a chasm between the earth and hell; it is a chasm between Abraham’s bosom (which, in principle can be likened to heaven), and that of hell. Those in hell cannot come to the place of the saved, and the saved cannot reach down with compassion to those who are lost. It is in the next request from the Rich Man that we have a possible clue. The Rich Man wants Lazarus to go to his brothers to warn them of hell. Abraham says that there is no point in doing so. v.31 “If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead”.

This passage implies the possibility of at least Lazarus being able to go to the living (it implies the Rich Man in hell cannot), but Abraham refuses the request not because it is impossible to do so, but because there is no point in doing so.

C. Conclusion *So what do we have?

  1. We know that ghosts do not have flesh and bones. (Luke 24:39)
  2. We know that the dead can communicate with the living. (1 Sam 28; Sirach 46:20)
  3. We know that at least in some context allowed by God, the dead can be conjured in some fashion. (1 Sam 28)
  4. We know that it is possible for the dead to appear on the earth (Matt 72; 1 Sam 28)
  5. We know that is may be possible for the dead to not only appear on the earth, but appear to people and talk with them (Luke 16:27-31; 1 Sam 28)
  6. We know that it is possible for the living to bi-locate (Rev. 17:3; 21:10; 2 Cor 12:2)
  7. We know that it is possible for spirits to communicate in dreams and the person to have a bodily reaction to the visitation (Job 4:15)

II. Comments from Peter Kreeft

Now, let’s take a look at what Peter Kreeft says about this. He wrote at least two books that mention this subject, “Angels (and demons): What Do we Know About Them?” and “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Heaven”. His comments stem from his study of Thomas Aquinas, Philosophy, and other Catholic saints and observers on this subject.

Kreeft makes mention that many very reputable people, such as C.S. Lewis, have reported seeing a “ghost” of their wives. There are many instances from reputable sources of experiences that do not have ANY flavor of the demonic.

Based upon these anecdotal accounts Kreeft and others talk about identifying three kinds of ghosts. I would add a fourth and a fifth category (from Kreeft’’s material that he talks about but doesn’t categorized) and a sixth and seventh type from my own thoughts and observations.

III. Seven Kinds of Ghosts

1. GHOSTS OF THE FIRST KIND: The first kind Kreeft calls the “sad ones” or “wispy ones”. These Ghosts seem to be working out some unfinished business of some sort, or suffering some purgatorial purification.

He says that these Ghosts would seem to be the ones who just barely made it into Purgatory, who feel little or no joy yet and who need to learn many painful lessons about their past lives on earth. God, in his compassion, may realize that to allow the person to get through Purgatory that it may be useful for them to learn some lessons on this earth.

2. GHOSTS OF THE SECOND KIND: A Second kind may be some of these purgatorial ghosts who might have been so material minded in their earthly life that they can’t detach themselves from these Material places or possessions. God may allow them to remain attached as they work out their need to “let go”.

3. GHOSTS OF THE THIRD KIND: A third type might be those who don’t yet realize they are dead. Again, in God’s compassion, I can see why He would allow a spirit to linger for a short while so that they may realize their fate before leaving this world completely. In both the “second kind” and “third kind” God could, of course, force the person to let go of the material place or to come on through the “gate” and not linger. But a compassionate Father can also allow for a “little” tolerance to help the person to adjust.

4. GHOSTS OF A FOURTH KIND: A Fourth type are the malicious and deceptive spirits. These are the one who probably appear at séances and the like and are most likely from hell. And most likely are demons disguised as dead loved ones and not the human persons themselves.

5. GHOSTS OF A FIFTH KIND: A Fifth type are the bright, happy spirits of dead friends and family who appear unbidden at God’s will, not ours, with messages of hope and love. They seem to come from heaven. These type may come to a loved one to say goodbye or to comfort them after a funeral, for example. Or these type may come to a relative or friend in “great” need. God may allow these dead relatives to come to the bedside of a loved one just before death. This would be an act of compassion to comfort the person as they pass from this life to the next. There are very trustworthy empirical and psychological evidence for these phenomena.

6. GHOSTS OF A SIXTH KIND: (updated: 9/4/08) A sixth type involves the ghost performing a certain scene repetitively. For example, a ghost of this type may go from the top of the stairs to the bottom and then disappear. This may happen over and over again. It never changes. The Ghost never interacts with anyone, and we cannot interact with it. It never changes facial expression nor does it ever acknowledge anything around it.

There are many theories to explain this phenomenon, but no real explanations. A popular notion is the concept of a “Residual Ghost”, which I originally posited in 1999. Since that time, after a more careful study of physics changed my position on this. The notion of a Residual Ghost is well expressed recently by Jason Hawes of the Atlantic Paranormal Society: that “A residual haunting is like having an impression made in time. The entity may seem to be lost in a time warp. The spirit really isn’t even there, only the energy is.” The Glossary on their website gives a more formal definition:

Psychic imprint of a scene which is repeatedly played out, where the witness of such phenomenon essentially is peering into the past. The ghostly participants of these time-displacements often seem unaware of their living observers.

There are significant problems with this theory. The physics of matter and energy makes this theory nearly impossible. Cody Polston, Founder and President of the Southwest Ghost Hunter’s Association, gives a very good and succinct scientific explanation of why the Residual Haunting is implausible in his article, Residual hauntings, a flawed hypothesis.

Ockham’s razor (“All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best”) advises us to avoid complex explanations. The theory of Residual Ghosts creates all sorts of problems that must be resolved before it can be plausible. A more plausible and simpler explanation is that “residual ghosts” are actually demonic in origin.

We know from cases throughout the history of the Church that one of Satan’s tactics is to instill an unhealthy curiosity into things concerning the paranormal. To experience a “residual ghost” usually creates an interest and curiosity on the part of the experiencer in the paranormal. Sometimes the experiencer will further explore contact with the spirit world or other dangerous explorations into the paranormal. God warns us of the danger to our soul by trying to contact the dead. Our Lord calls these activities an abomination (Deut. 18:9-12). Satan would love to inspire such curiosity and to lure a person into his sandbox.

7. GHOSTS OF THE SEVENTH KIND: Some “apparent” ghostly apparitions or effects may be the bi-location of the living…the Astral projections of living people. This can be postulated from scriptural evidence (Rev. 17:3; 21:10; and 2 Cor 12:2), and from verified reports of bi-location of people like Padre Pio.

IV. What should our demeanor be toward “any” ghostly event?

John Henry Newman answers Calvinist attack (before papal visit)

Fascinating.

Next month Pope Benedict XVI will visit the United Kingdom. Since the first announcement of the papal visit various groups and cohorts at enmity with the Catholic Church have organized to protest and disfigure the appearance of the pontiff, whom many are now calling the ‘Pope of Christian Unity’. I look for such attacks to multiply, but I also believe conversions will occur…

During his visit the Pope will beatify Cardinal John Henry Newman. According to this same source, his canonisation will make Newman the first English person to have lived since the 17th century (Protestant Reformation) to be declared a saint. Newman was a Church of England convert to Catholicism who before his conversion was convinced that Rome had corrupted the primitive Christian faith…

The following attack on the Church and papacy found its way into my e-mail box today. Having little knowledge of the history of Calvinism, or for that matter, of John Henry Newman, I found myself reading up on both this evening. As I read on over Newman’s ‘An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine’ I realized that the soon-to-be-blessed was perfectly explaining  the eternal relevance of the Catholic Church in the world of souls today and throughout history, as opposed to both religious and non-religious groups doomed attempt(s) at publicly declaring her corruption and irrelevance.

Blessed Newman is an example of why such declarations will eventually fall away into ruin, because he himself came to realize that despite the fallen nature of her members, the world, and of course, the machinations of the Devil, all that the Church believes and teaches in doctrine and worship of God for the sake of souls and their salvation is predicated on ‘unchanging truth….’ From the beginning, throughout history, onto the Judgement, and fully into eternity, Jesus Christ remains the same yesterday, today, and forever: He is unchanging truth. He, (as with the church he founded), is the stone the builder’s are rejecting; He has promised to remain with her even to the end of the world…

And that too, is unchanging truth.

I encourage you to view the full 8-minute video, followed by the timely reply from Cardinal Newman.

This from a site called Shofar Ministries:

Friends in about 4 weeks time Pope Benedict XVI will arrive in the UK on a 4 day visit. Many evangelicals believe the Roman Catholic religion is Christian. They could not be more wrong.

I believe this visit is another evidence of God’s judgement on us for turning away from his truth over the last 50 years.

Whilst I do believe there are many true believers within the RCC they must leave before Rome is judged by God in the coming days. However when one studies the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church it becomes obvious that the Roman way of salvation is not the same as the bible’s way. They may use the same terms such as “born again” but they do not mean the same as evangelical believers.

For evidence of Rome’s false gospel please watch this video and do not be deceived by those who tell you Rome has changed. She has not changed.

Cardinal Newman:

“It is true, there have been seasons when, from the operation of external or internal causes, the Church has been thrown into what was almost a state of deliquium; but her wonderful revivals, while the world was triumphing over her, is a further evidence of the absence of corruption in the system of doctrine and worship into which she has developed. If corruption be an incipient disorganisation, surely an abrupt and absolute recurrence to the former state of vigour, after an interval, is even less conceivable than a corruption that is permanent. Now this is the case with the revivals I speak of. After violent exertion men are exhausted and fall asleep; they awake the same as before, refreshed by the temporary cessation of their activity; and such has been the slumber and such the restoration of the Church. She pauses in her course, and almost suspends her functions; she rises again, and she is herself once more; all things are in their place and ready for action. Doctrine is where it was, and usage, and precedence, and principle, and policy; there may be changes, but they are consolidations or adaptations; all is unequivocal and determinate, with an identity which there is no disputing. Indeed it is one of the most popular charges against the Catholic Church at this very time, that she is “incorrigible;” change she cannot, if we listen to St. Athanasius or St. Leo; change she never will, if we believe the controversialist or alarmist of the present day.”

In 1991, Newman was proclaimed “Venerable” by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. His beatification is expected to be officially proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to the UK on 19 September 2010.[5]

(Pics) Eucharistic Miracle — Inside the Vatican

“If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh…”  Jesus Christ

EDITOR NOTE: I was not familiar with Julia Kim or the various reported miracles and messages occurring in Naju, Korea, until I received these pics by e-mail. Of course, our faith does not depend on miracles and Catholics are not required to believe in them, even when approved by the Church–and there have been many such Eucharistic miracles. Thus far, Naju is not approved, and there appears to be considerable controversy involved. On a personal note, I already believe. The Holy Spirit confirmed the true presence of Christ—body, blood, soul, and divinity—at the first Mass I attended back in 1996. It was at that very moment sitting in mass that I realized the need to convert and become a Catholic. Why? Because, God doesn’t lie, whoever eats this bread will live forever and The Most Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life—God from God, Light from Light…

I’ve linked to the website for your own discernment.

During an overnight prayer meeting in Naju on November 24, 2009 commemorating the fifteenth anniversary of Archbishop Giovanni Bulaitis¡¯visit to Naju and his witnessing two miraculous descents of the Eucharist on the same day, the Blessed Mother instructed Julia to visit Archbishop Giovanni Bulaitis. On February 26, 2010, Julia Kim together with Fr. Aloysius Chang and a few volunteer helpers made a trip to Rome. She was also carrying with her the Eucharist that had bled on October 16, 2006 as well as the messages from Jesus and the Blessed Mother on October 15 and 16, 2006 for the Holy Father.

When Julia and her companions visited Archbishop Bulaitis on February 27, 2010, His Excellency asked Julia what her plan was for the trip. Julia answered that she would only obey the Archbishop regarding what she was to do in Rome. The Archbishop said that he had heard from the Blessed Mother while he was praying two days earlier that Julia will tell something for him. The Archbishop also told Julia that the Blessed Mother had said, ¡°Last time (on November 24, 1994), you received the Eucharist from Julia; this time, you give her the Eucharist. The Archbishop continued, “Let’s have the Sunday Mass tomorrow in the chapel here in my official residence.”

From 10 a.m. on February 28, Archbishop Bulaitis and Fr. Aloysius Chang concelebrated the Mass. During the Communion, the Archbishop gave Julia the Sacred Host. While Julia was meditating, she called one of the helpers and opened her mouth. The helper was surprised and asked the Archbishop to come closer. The Archbishop saw that the Eucharist was changing into visible flesh and blood on her tongue. He was startled and asked the four Sisters who were also at the Mass to come and see.

Fresh blood was covering the Eucharist, and, at the same time, the Eucharist was becoming larger. A while later, some blood was seen in the little space between the Eucharist and Julia’s tongue. The Archbishop observed every change in the Eucharist without turning his eyes away from the Eucharist even once, as, through this miracle, the inner reality of the Eucharist, which is the Real Presence of the living and breathing Jesus with His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity normally hidden behind the species of bread and wine, was being revealed. The Archbishop instructed Julia to swallow the Eucharist. Julia was wishing that the Eucharist would be preserved, but promptly obeyed the Archbishop¡¯s instruction.

The Archbishop then poured some water into the ciborium and asked Julia to drink it. After she drank the water, the Archbishop examined the inside of her mouth to see if there were any wounds. Then, the Archbishop wiped the inside of Julia’s mouth with a purificator (linen), but did not see any blood on the purificator. All these steps taken by the Archbishop must have been the most proper and thoughtful procedures as a shepherd in the Church for a clear and authentic discernment of whether the sign he observed was of a supernatural origin or not.

A Message of Love from the Blessed Mother

received by Julia Kim in Rome on February 28, 2010

In obedience to the Blessed Mother’s instruction on November 24, 2009: “Visit Archbishop Giovanni Bulaitis”, I arrived in Rome in the night of February 26, 2010 together with Fr. Aloysius Chang and four other companions. In the morning of the next day, February 27, Saturday, we and Mrs. Cäcilia Pohl from Germany visited His Excellency Archbishop Giovanni Bulaitis at his official residence. His Excellency told us that he had received a response from the Blessed Mother while he was praying two days earlier: “You will hear some words from Julia. On November 24, 1994, you received the Eucharist through Julia, but this time you should give the Eucharist to her.” His Excellency invited us to the Sunday Mass the next day, February 28.

The Mass, concelebrated by Archbishop Giovanni Bulaitis and Fr. Aloysius Chang, began at 10 a.m. on February 28 in the chapel at His Excellency’s official residence. While I was meditating after receiving Communion, I felt that the Eucharist in my mouth was becoming larger and asked Peter Kim sitting next to me to take a look. Peter was surprised and reported what he saw to His Excellency. His Excellency, Fr. Chang, four Sisters, and the visitors from Korea and Germany all saw the miracle of love in which the Eucharist changed into flesh and blood.

After observing the changed species of the Eucharist, His Excellency instructed me to swallow the Eucharist. I had some hope that the Eucharist could be preserved, but swallowed the Eucharist in obedience to His Excellency’s instruction. At that moment, Jesus and the Blessed Mother appeared and blessed all the persons in the chapel. Then, the Blessed Mother began speaking.

The Blessed Mother:

“Giovanni, my extremely beloved son whom I can put in my eyes without any pain! Together with my Son Jesus, I love you so much. You were called (to Naju in 1994) as the representative of the Pope and I have always been with you in your every move. Sometimes I protected you from the crisis of death and have looked after you.

My beloved son who has been specially called!

The Lord, who has the keys to death, hell, and Heaven, is also Alpha and Omega, that is, the beginning and the end, isn’t He? The Lord died, but is alive and breathing in the Eucharist like this (=as you saw the moving Eucharist in Julia’s mouth) and will be present in all eternity. The Lord began the miracles of the Eucharist coming down from above through you in Naju, but today is the day when, through you, the Eucharistic miracle occurred for the last time. Do not worry, but meditate well on “Omega” and put it into practice.

The division in the Church continues becoming more serious and numerous souls have fallen into a swamp and are floundering, but even the shepherds, who are supposed to make the Lord known, are spiritually blind and deaf and are singing the times of peace even while witnessing the disasters that are occurring at different places in the world and are criticizing others’ faults while remaining blind to their own faults. That is why this Mommy’s Heart has become so anxious and worried that I have arranged your meeting like this. Therefore, make haste to help Naju be approved as soon as possible so that the numerous souls may repent and be saved.

My Son Jesus, Who possesses the Divine Nature, should receive all the power, honor, glory, and worship, but the children who accept that He comes in the appearance of bread, hiding all His power, solemn dignity, divinity, and humanity, to save all the poor children in the world who have lost their ways and are wandering are very few. That is why my Son Jesus wears the crown of thorns instead of the royal crown even today and allowed your meeting, with His Love, in order to save even those souls who have human faces but brutal minds.

Giovanni, my extremely beloved son! As there is no time to hesitate or procrastinate, make haste, with a most sublime mind, to pass on to the Pope and Cardinal Ivan Dias Jesus’ Substance present in the Eucharist and the messages so that (the messages) may be put into practice.

All of you, whom I have chosen and who know well that God can make you prosperous and successful but can also exterminate you and wipe you out, must become united with much greater love and perpetuate the Paschal Mysteries of the Last Supper and the Resurrection, as your situation is the same as that of the Apostles, who had been personally chosen by the Lord for the salvation of the world, gathered in the Cenacle before they completed their mission through their martyrdom.

Through my invisible presence, I will build anew the places destroyed by Satan, with your help, so that the triumph may be achieved in the fierce battle in these end times. Thus, you will surely see the triumph of my Immaculate Heart, and, when my Son Jesus returns to this world, you who have followed me and made me known will also stand with Christ in His glory.”

Icon of Our Lady Weeping in France – Is it any wonder?

I tend to believe this one…

Considering the following numbers and recent troubles in France, is it any wonder Our Lady is weeping?

The IFOP Institute has just made a survey on Catholicism in France for the daily La Croix. The result is mind-blowing:

  • Whilst, in 1965, 81% of the French declared themselves as Catholics, they were no more than 64% in 2009.
  • More serious: whilst 27% of the French went to Mass once a week or more in 1965, they are no more than 4.5% in 2009.
  • At a doctrinal level, generally, it’s a catastrophe: 63% of practicing Catholics think all religions are the same; 75% ask for an “aggiornamento” of the Church on contraception and even 68% for abortion.
  • As for communion with the Roman Pontiff, the situation is no better: only 27% of practicing Catholics consider that Benedict XVI “rather well” defends “the values of Catholicism” (personally, I don’t even understand the question, but that doesn’t matter) when 34% think he defends them “rather badly”.

The story follows:

HUNDREDS of people are flocking to see a painting of the Virgin Mary which its owner claims is crying tears of oil.

Esat Altindagoglu has been inundated with more than 50 visitors a day hoping to see the “miracle” at his house near Paris, France.

The foot-high statue was given to his wife Sevin by a Lebanese priest on her birthday in 2006, the Turkish-born salesman said.

It began weeping oil on February 12 this year, and had been crying every day since, he claims.

He said: “As word spread, people started arriving from France, then from all over Europe.

“I’ve been having between 50 and 60 people a day turning up for more than three weeks now.”

An Orthodox priest had now agreed to say mass at his home in Garges-les-Gonesse this week to thank the Virgin Mary, Mr Altindagoglu said.

He added: “Apparently the next step is to have the weeping witnessed by a bishop so the miracle can be officially recognised by the church.”

Over the centuries there have been hundreds of incidents of statues said to have weeped blood, oil or water.

But the only one ever approved as a miracle by the Pope was Our Lady of Akita in Japan in 1973, with all the others ruled out as hoaxes.

Diocese of Rancagua, Chile: 66 churches, 700 chapels, 90% damaged or destroyed

Unto the end, for the sons of Core, for the hidden. Our God is our refuge and strength: a helper in troubles, which have found us exceedingly. Therefore we will not fear, when the earth shall be troubled; and the mountains shall be removed into the heart of the sea. Their waters roared and were troubled: the mountains were troubled with his strength. The stream of the river maketh the city of God joyful: the most High hath sanctified his own tabernacle. God is in the midst thereof, it shall not be moved: God will help it in the morning early. Nations were troubled, and kingdoms were bowed down: he uttered his voice, the earth trembled.

Psalm 46: 1-7

Cathedral of Rancagua, Chile

EDITOR NOTE: I received the following condolences and prayers for the Church and peoples of Chile from Bishop Michael Wustenberg, South Africa, which I pass on:

Greetings to the Archbishop and all the people in the area of Concepcion

As Bishop of one of the poorest Dioceses in South Africa I want to express our solidarity and prayer for you in this time of pain, loss and disaster especially to you in the area mostly affected by the recent earthquake.

Crises tend to bring out the worst and the best in people. May this time of trial give rise to the most noble of our values and virtues, to rebuild not only infrastructure but the spiritual beauty that we are capable of.

May God bless you all

EDITOR: I received this request for help in Spanish tonight; my Google translation into English follows:

‘Alabado sea el Señor.

Con el trágico terremoto que ha asolado a Chile en estos días he perdido todo contacto con la familia de mi hijo el Sr. Juan Dettwiler Rojas, periodista, que vive en una población que está a orillas del río Bio Bio. Les estaría muy agradecido si pudieran enviarme un recado si saben algo sobre ellos.’
