Rachel’s Vineyard

Rachel’s Vineyard is a safe place to renew, rebuild and redeem hearts broken by abortion. Weekend retreats offer you a supportive, confidential and non-judgmental environment where women and men can express, release and reconcile painful post-abortive emotions to begin the process of restoration, renewal and healing… [click here]

Below is the near 2000-year-old historical record of Christianity opposing abortion:

“You shall not kill the child by obtaining an abortion.  Nor, again, shall you destroy him after he is born.”  St. Barnabas, “Epistle of St. Barnabas,” c. 70-100 A.D.

“You shall not murder a child by abortion nor kill one who has been born.” The Didache [The Teaching Of The Twelve Apostles] c. 80-140 A.D.

“Women who were reputed believers began to resort to drugs for producing sterility.  They also girded themselves around, so as to expel what was being conceived.  For they did not wish to have a child by either slave or by any common fellow – out of concern for their family and their excessive wealth.  See what a great impiety the lawless one has advanced!  He teaches adultery and murder at the same time!”  St. Hipploytus, “Refutation Of All Heresies,” c. 225 A.D.

“He [the schismatic Novatian] struck the womb of his wife with his heel and hurried an abortion, thereby causing parricide.”  St. Cyprian of Carthage, “Epistle 52 To Cornelius,” c. 251 A.D.

“A woman who deliberately destroys a fetus is answerable for murder.  And any fine distinction as to its being completely formed or unformed is not admissible amongst us.”  St. Basil the Great, “Epistle 138,” c. 375 A.D.

“Others drink for sterility and commit murder on the human not yet sown. Some when they sense that they have conceived by sin, consider the poisons for abortion, and frequently die themselves along with it, and go to Hell guilty of three crimes:  murdering themselves, committing adultery against Christ, and murder against their unborn child.”  St. Jerome, “Epistle 22,” c. 380 A.D.

“The rich women, to avoid dividing the inheritance among many, kill their own fetus in the womb and with murderous juices extinguish in the genital chamber their children.”  St. Ambrose “On the Hexaemeron,” c. 386 A.D.

“To destroy the fetus ‘is something worse than murder.’ The one who does this ‘does not take away life that has already been born, but prevents it from being born.'” St. John Chrysostom “Homilies on Romans,” c. 391 A.D.

  1. Mary Ann’s comments are absurd. While I have mixed feelings about abortion, contraception is necessary. Without contraception, the world may be so overpopulated that people would die of poverty and famine! It is time that the RCC modify its teaching on contraceptive usage.
Very few people follow it, even very few practicing Catholics.

    1. Jim, 7-1-14

You are gravely misinformed about abortion and contraceptives.
The world would not be so over populated. There is plenty of
room for all God wants to born into this world! That’s a
propaganda ploy of pro-abortion people. And you swallowed it!

  2. Thanks Jim for your comment:

Have to disagree with the overpopulation myth and starvation argument– Did you know if all the world’s population were gathered up and placed inside the state of Texas that each person would live in the space of 1200 square feet?

A lot of space for one person.

And as for starvation–the rest of the world would be available to sustain needs and services etc… See here for the math, numbers and further conversation.

The current problems and sufferings Jim, (which I don’t minimize in the least), are they not do in large part to man’s selfishness?

Which brings us to the reality of contraception… (which we have already eliminated as an needed tool to guard against “overpopulation and starvation”).

“The Catholic Church is not against controlling the number of births by natural means, such as Natural Family Planning or abstinence. What the Church is against is artificial means of controlling births, such as drugs or devices that prevent conception. The use of such things to deliberately frustrate the normal effects of sexual intercourse is a very grave sin against the law of God because its ultimate implication is the destruction of the human race.”

See here (Catholic Truth) for more information on what the Church actually teaches about contraception and the sacred act of procreation…

Note: Just because “everybody” (including Catholics) is using contraception does not make it morally right…

peace to you and yours Jim–

  3. The less people, the more greedy, the greater the divide between richer and poorer. But if people are generous to follow the natural law, which excludes contraception, then a generous table is also set for all.

But there is always war and famine on this earth because some people choose to be selfish.

  4. Wow, love this blog (in general) and specifically your quotes from the early church fathers showing that the church from the very beginning (like the quote from the Didache) opposed abortion. Thank you sooooo much for doing this research. I have bookmarked your blog and will return – looks like a lot of good reading here! God bless you!
SueW, Catholic, prolife and proud of it

PS: to the person who said abortion was necessary because of over population… we are at BELOW zero population growth now and are officially a dying society. Folks who advocate abortion will have their reward because in about 20 years the Muslims who do NOT believe in abortion and also believe in large families and are at RECORD population growth, will outnumber the rest of us and not only will they prohibit abortion but guess what, they have no use for gays, agnostics, atheists and the like. (as well as little use for Christians or Jews) So if our society doesn’t get WISE fast, we will be in deep doo doo…

  5. If someone is a catholic then they should consider the Virgin Mary and her beliefs to be perfect. She has repeatedly said in visitations that mankind is running off into the abyss. Also she has condemned abortion, homosexuality, and contraception in medjugore on multiple occasions. There is only the word that is greater than hers and that is her Son. If you don’t believe in her than neither do you believe in God. Then Satan can just hold you by his shackles and direct your emotions and thoughts to perverseness any way he wants until he does his ultimate wicked goal, which is the destruction of man.

  6. Abortion is murder whether a politician believes it or not, just as my Confirmation name is Catherine, whether a person believes it or not. Being an abortionist is not a great doctoring job. Many abortionists are there because it is a good money making venture. Fortunately they are not beyond help. Father Pavone has helped many of them in their conversion process and the converted abortionists now help to fight against the ugly business that they were once involved in. There was a case here in (Sydney) Australia, where a man kicked a pregnant woman in the stomach, causing her to lose the baby, (which is also his child). He went to jail for 10 years for killing the baby and I think that he is still there. This is a correct decision and I applaud it, but it is in an Australian state where abortion is practiced, as it is practiced just about everywhere else. What a contradiction. I am glad that I am not an unborn baby today. It is a dangerous time for them. Cases like that of the Sydney woman which highlight the contradictions in law regarding the unborn, at least give a faint glimmer of hope, that there will one day be some sanity and proper protection of the unborn. I have been told a forum of similar contradictions in U.S. law. It also makes me wonder if some politicians actually know that the unborn are real people, but chose in the case of abortion to ignore what they clearly understood when it came to the case which is mentioned in this posting of the Sydney woman who was kicked in the stomach. I also wonder what those who favour and push for abortion think about the Sydney woman’s case. It must be a thorn in their side.

  7. Just discovered this blog.

Thanks for posting these remarkable quotes from early Church fathers.

I would like to add that I believe that there is a foundation of logic as to why the Church stands opposed to abortion, contraception, homosexuality, masturbation, and all actions which deviate from or disrupt the natural design of our human sexuality.

Simply put, God made the original man in the likeness of Himself. God then created woman from man, so, from thenceforth, the nearest man comes to resembling the original likeness is when united with woman (being of one flesh). When Man and Woman are united by love in intercoarse they are able to procreate and thus establish a human trinity which resembles the likeness of the Holy Trinity.

When man and/or woman interferes with, or impedes, the nature of the human trinity it is sinful as it is a blaspemy towards the Holy Trinity. Each sexually related deviation, be it contraception or abortion or homosexual acts or mastubation, denies the formation of the third person of the human trinity. This denial is a statement that the individual desires to not want to resemble the likeness of God, thus is blasphemous. The denial of the third person within the human trinity congruently is denying the Giver of Life, the Third Person of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit.

When we examine the proliferation of sexual deviances within our society we can appreciate how offensive and disrespectful our culture must appear to God. In this regard, abortion is the most heinous display of hatred towards God as the individuals having formed the third person of the human trinity choose to destroy it. The sentiment of the abortion being that man/woman showcases that they would go to the extreme of destroying the fetus rather than have themselves bear the likeness of God.

When we recognize that this act has occurred 1 billion times it should provide a much needed awareness for the need of reconciliation.

  8. I am ashamed to tell you that I, for a period of about twenty years, allowed myself to accept as true the propositions of those who would support abbortion as a “choice”. I allowed myself to be duped–and now I am angry with myself, for believing in and calling myself a pro-choice person.
I repudiate that view before you, and I ask Yours and God’s and the unborn’s forgiveness. And my priest has directed my toward the good that I can do on behalf of the unborn. And I pray rosaries daily for them and for the abolition of abortion, I do e-activism, and when possible participate in public demonstrations for life. Pray for me and for those who, like me, were duped! I have a chance to save my soul, and to save the lives of many unborn–not to mention those who have a low quality of life and health. I stand up for them too. There is no human life that is not a miracle from God. Thank God that my heart was turned to truth.

    1. Janine don’t be angry with yourself over this. As the saying goes: there is no use crying over spilt milk. The angels in heaven are rejoicing over your conversion!

Your testimony is extremely valuable. You give much needed encouragement to pro-lifers who pray for an end to the culture of life.

Often we pray for good things, which we don’t see the results of. They happen (or will happen) but are kept hidden from our eyes. We humans like to see results. It is very heartening when we do get to see results.

      Keep praying.

If you want to make your prayers for the unborn more effective: pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory and recommend your petitions to them. They are really good at praying (for others, but can do nothing at all for themselves). They can obtain favours for us.

Here are two saintly testimonies regarding this:

St John Vianney said: “If one knew what we may obtain from God by the intercession of the Poor Souls, they would not be so much abandoned. Let us pray a great deal for them, they will pray for us”. St Theresa of Avila said that “She always obtained the favours which she asked from God, through the intercession of the Poor Souls in Purgatory.

I have put up testimonies regarding the intercession of the Holy Souls in Purgatory for their benefactors at this link:

and recommend that everyone praying for an end to the culture of death turn over their petitions to them.

I also post here a little victory story:

Prayer stops an abortion at the eleventh hour
A friend telephoned me with an urgent request. She told me about an abortion that was scheduled for the very next morning and asked me to pray that it would be stopped. She also telephoned other people to ask for prayers. It was short notice for such an important petition and I wished that I had been told about the planned abortion much sooner, but I prayed as requested. To my great joy, the man and his girl friend decided to keep the baby.

This story is one of many stories in the online version of my book: Help from Heaven (Answers to Prayers), which can be read free on-line at:

Anyone one reading this book, will have greater confidence in getting their prayers answered.

    2. I am a 61 year old post abortive woman who received healing and renewal at a Rachel”s Vineyard weekend retreat. Our Lord is calling all men and women who have been harmed by the sin of abortion to open their hearts to His healing touch. We can be Silent No More about the devastation caused by this evil act.

      1. Patricia– Thank you for your response.

I too attended a Rachel’s Vineyard weekend retreat here in Oregon. Somewhere between our personal stories and the resultant wailing and weeping I gained a greater understanding of just how pervasive this evil has become in our society. A generation has been hoodwinked, but the personal tragedy and human loss remains; even if buried in some manner within our hearts.

        A healing is needed…

Rachel’s Vineyard provides this, and I view my experience at the retreat as a great mercy of God.
