Saved Video of the C.T.A. “Potato Head” Liturgy: Why It Disturbs Us So…
“Horrible”, “disturbing”, “strange and grotesque”, “God help us…”
These words above describing the post ‘Mr Potato Head Concelebrates The Holy Mass?’ reveals the standard reaction of thousands of people who viewed the 11 minute video captured from the closing liturgy of the 2008 West Coast Call To Action Conference found on this site and others. I agree, and believe as one responder noted, “that despite the disturbing nature of the content it’s necessary for us to glimpse this side of Catholicism.” Personally, I find nothing amusing.
The truth of the matter is, and I believe the present age confirms, that we Catholic’s are at war-and the battle is over the true presence.
In reviewing comments here and elsewhere it became apparent to me rather quickly that the reason the video is so disturbing to so many is that the wingding we watched runs absolutely counter to the Jesus we know within our hearts, within the Gospel, of Tradition handed down, and the Jesus explained to us by the Spirit who speaks to us all through the stabilizing force of the teaching magisterium–of those Bishops in union with Peter.
To be clear, we are not at war with those in attendance at the conference, for these are merely victims of this great war of errors. These are folks who have allowed themselves to be led into spiritual confusion through that Contrarion to Truth, that liar and murderer from the beginning, who having stripped these of the true nature of their faith and its practice have now by the pride of intelligence been led into obstinate dissent to obedience within the sacred body-a spiritual trait of our Catholic faith born of the Holy One who practiced obedience all the way to the cross; He who even now continually practices it on behalf of these he loves still.
The video for us revealed in part the image and works of the real and intelligent ruler of this world, the Devil-a spiritual reality, indeed, so horrible, strange, grotesque and disturbing that many saints past and present call(ed) out to God for help. And the sad part is–as it was on earth so it was in heaven–the same errors and images we viewed within the Mass also appeared at the very doorsteps of heaven-the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of our Mother, Mary. Can anyone reading this post and having viewed this mimick of truth with the eyes and ears of the heart turned upward into the vision of our baptism not commiserate in some real way with the words of St. Paul below in this hour?
“[O]n frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my own race, dangers from Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea, dangers among false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many sleepless nights, through hunger and thirst, through frequent fastings, through cold and exposure. And apart from these things, there is the daily pressure upon me of my anxiety for all the churches” (2 Corinthians 11:26-28).
Yes, we are in a battle. And the dangers we face are nothing new to us. We know well the results of temporary defeats, of agonies associated with those victories of disunity within the body at the hands of our shared adversary. St. Paul and the infant Church experienced them, the 16th century realized them with perhaps the greatest victory of the adversary yet with the coming of Protestant Reformation, and we ourselves know and experience them too.
Our prayers, sentiments, and actions in this battle (this age) must be similar to those of Blessed Angela Salawa—who recognizing the God she loved so within the war wounded and casualties of World War I wrote within her diary these tender words to our tender Lord:
“My Jesus, may you be loved (adored) equally as much as you have been destroyed.”
And let us make no mistake in this war of error, the real presence and very person of Jesus has not only been disfigured, but has fallen within the hearts of many… Too many. Let us tend to him, then, in the wounded before us with the balm of divine truth and medicine of human love…
