To My Grandfather, Father, Uncle, Those Alive, and Those Known Only to God… Thank You.

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes: And death shall be no more, nor mourning, nor crying, nor sorrow shall be any more, for the former things have passed away.

And he that sat on the throne, said: Behold I make all things new. And he said to me: It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega; the beginning and the end. To him that thirsteth, I will give of the fountain of life, freely.

He that shall overcome shall possess these things, and I will be his God; and he shall be my son.

Mary and the Moslems

by Bishop Fulton Sheen

fulton.jpg Moslemism is the only great post-Christian religion of the world. Because it had its origin in the seventh century under Mohammed, it was possible to unite within it some elements of Christianity and of Judaism.

Moslemism takes the doctrine of the unity of God, His Majesty, and His Creative Power, and uses it as a basis for the repudiation of Christ, the Son of God.

Misunderstanding the notion of the Trinity, Mohammed made Christ a prophet only.

The Catholic Church throughout Northern Africa was virtually destroyed by Moslem power and at the present time (circa 1950), the Moslems are beginning to rise again.

If Moslemism is a heresy, as Hilaire Belloc believes it to be, it is the only heresy that has never declined, either in numbers, or in the devotion of its followers.

The missionary effort of the Church toward this group has been, at least on the surface, a failure, for the Moslems are so far almost unconvertible. The reason is that for a follower of Mohammed to become a Christian is much like a Christian becoming a Jew. The Moslems believe that they have the final and definitive revelation of God to the world and that Christ was only a prophet announcing Mohammed, the last of God’s real prophets.

Today (1950), the hatred of the Moslem countries against the West is becoming hatred against Christianity itself. Although the statesmen have not yet taken it into account, there is still grave danger that the temporal power of Islam may return and, with it, the menace that it may shake off a West which has ceased to be Christian, and affirm itself as a great anti-Christian world Power.

wartimeprayerbookt.jpg It is our firm belief that the fears some entertain concerning the Moslems are not to be realized, but that Moslemism, instead, will eventually be converted to Christianity – and in a way that even some of our missionaries never suspect.

It is our belief that this will happen not through the direct teaching of Christianity, but through a summoning of the Moslems to a veneration of the Mother of God.

This is the line of argument:

The Koran, which is the bible of the Moslems, has many passages concerning the Blessed Virgin. First, the Koran believes in her Immaculate Conception and in her Virgin Birth. The third chapter of the Koran places the history of Mary’s family in a genealogy that goes back through Abraham, Noah, and Adam. When one compares the Koran’s description of the birth of Mary with the apocryphal Gospel of the birth of Mary, one is tempted to believe that Mohammed very much depended upon the latter.

Both books describe the old age and the definite sterility of Anne, the mother of Mary. When, however, Anne conceives, the mother of Mary is made to say in the Koran: “O Lord, I vow and I consecrate to you what is already within me. Accept it from me.”

When Mary is born, her mother, Anne, says: “And I consecrate her with all of her posterity under thy protection, O Lord against Satan!”

The Koran has also verses on the Annunciation, Visitation, and nativity. Angels are pictured as accompanying the Blessed Mother and saying, “O Mary, God has chosen you and purified you, and elected you above all the women of the earth.”

In the nineteenth chapter of the Koran, there are forty-one verses on Jesus and Mary. There is such a strong defense of the virginity of Mary here that the Koran, in the fourth book, attributes the condemnation of the Jews to their monstrous calumny against the Virgin Mary.

Mary, then, is for the Moslems the true ‘Sayyida, or Lady. The only possible serious rival to her in their creed would be Fatima, the daughter of Mohammed himself. However, after the death of Fatima, Mohammed wrote: “Thou shalt be the most blessed of all the women in Paradise, after Mary.”

In a variant of the text, Fatima is made to say, “I surpass all the women, except Mary.”

fatimabvm.gif This brings us to our second point, namely, why the Blessed Mother, in this twentieth century (1950), should have revealed herself in the insignificant little village of Fatima, so that to all future generations she would be known as “Our Lady of Fatima.”

Nothing ever happens out of heaven except with a finesse of all details. I believe that the Blessed Virgin chose to be known as “Our Lady of Fatima” as a pledge and a sign of hope to the Moslem people, and as an assurance that they, who show her so much respect, will one day accept her Divine Son, too.

Evidence to support these views is found in the historical fact that the Moslems occupied Portugal for centuries. At the time when they were finally driven out, the last Moslem chief had a beautiful daughter by the name of Fatima.

A catholic boy fell in love with her, and for him she not only stayed behind when the Moslems left, but even embraced the Catholic faith. The young husband was so much in love with her that he changed the name of the town where he lived to Fatima. Thus, the very place where Our Lady appeared in 1917 bears a historical connection to Fatima, the daughter of Mohammed.

The final evidence of the relationship of Fatima to the Moslems is the enthusiastic reception that the Moslems in Africa and India and elsewhere gave to the Pilgrim statue of Our Lady of Fatima. Moslems attended the Catholic services in honor of Our Lady; they allowed religious processions and even prayers before their mosques; and in Mozambique the Moslems, who were unconverted, began to be Christian as soon as the statue of Our Lady of Fatima was erected.

Missionaries in the future will increasingly see that their apostolate among the Moslems will be successful in the measure that they preach Our Lady of Fatima. Because the Moslems have a devotion to Mary, our missionaries should be satisfied merely to expand and to develop that devotion with the full realization that Our Blessed Lady will carry the Moslems the rest of the way to her Divine Son.

As those who lose devotion to her lose belief in the Divinity of Christ, so those who intensify devotion to her gradually acquire that belief. [1]

I Dreamed I saw St. Augustine, or, There Must Be Fifty Ways To Scar(e) Your Children…

bob-dylan.jpg Among the many drawbacks of being on the road during the week with my job, there is one that really bugs me more than the others, I don’t get to view my e-mail or catch up on the news within the Illinois Valley until I return. Yes, I like News. This week offered up some old news which was a bit bizarre, well, o.k., it was all bizarre…

It seems My favorite flavor of poet crooner Bob Dylan is acting weird again, and has nothing better to do with his time (Out of Mind) than to scare kids–read this: http://www.easier.com/view/Lifestyle/Entertainment/Celebrities/article-113167.html

Kids are piercingly honest sometimes, aren’t they?

As was Candice Crombie’s son this past month, who told his mother (after viewing a sex ed. assembly at Lorna Byrne Middle School earlier in the month) that “He didn’t like how the material was presented, and was offended by it,” Candice said, “He was embarrassed.”

No candice, (if you read this) tell your son he has the gift of virtue and the ability to tell right from wrong…

It is we who should be embarrassed. Ashamed for allowing our public schools and government to force this rubbish upon the pure hearts of our children. Worse still, it was teens, indoctrinated by Planned Parenthood (sic), indoctrinating the middle graders there at school.

lbms1.jpg So…, let’s seeeee here…, what we have is an organization that is unarguably responsible for the death’s of millions of unborn children worldwide within our school systems instructing teens, who themselves were lucky enough to survive abortion, to teach their younger peers the merits of sex education and Planned Parenthood… Welcome to self-generational profiteering by a corporation in the business of death dealing… Well, at least we had enough sway with the powers that be to have all the Pop machines taken out, right?

Right.

And for all you folks who voted against Parental Notification in the last election, here’s why you shouldn’t have, it’s called unreported rape:

If your thinking that that was just a rare occasion for the abortion industry failing to follow the law of the land by reporting rape, try the study of Life Dynamics–This Texas based organization hired an actress to make approximately 800 calls to abortion facilities across several states, acting as a 13-year-old girl. The caller described herself as a victim of sexual assault, but 91 percent of the locations that admitted the action was a crime agreed to conceal it. Watch for your self:

Enough is enough.

The Word of God, St. Patrick, and Mission

historyofarchdiocese_image.jpg ”Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Matt. 28:19

THE WORD OF GOD, ST. PATRICK, AND MISSION

As might befit the personal utterance of our own patron Saint Patrick, there is a type of ‘unity of trinity’ to be found within the holy phrases–the Word of God, St. Patrick, and Mission. The historic impulse for the evangelization of pagan Ireland came about in time by the Word of God affecting the release of the long enslaved shepherd, whos conversion and mission would ultimately provide the emerald isle with its rich Catholic heritage through the establishment of churches, monastaries, schools, equality of laws, and most importantly, the vital conversion of her peoples to the one true God and faith. (John 17:3, Matt. 16:18). Such was the potency of the divine will being accomplished on earth by His vessel of grace, that through Patrick’s inspired preaching and teaching Ireland enjoys a Christian legacy of mission which continues down the ages reaching into and revered by other nations touching even our own mission family through its Irish immigrants.

It is, of course, the same Spirit of the Living God 1600 years, or so later, which continually gives aspiration to our own daily conversion and good works, reminding and directing us in accord with the same holy mandate in the world–go, make disciples, teach them, remember, I am with you. Thus, The continual mission of St Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church within our lives and within the local community is the same permanent mission of the Church in the world:

to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, baptizing disciples, [and] teaching all to observe that which the Divine Redeemer requires for their eternal salvation.

This is our mission.

THE MOST HOLY ACTION ON EARTH

I witnessed firsthand this vital work of the Church last week during my son Andrew’s first Holy Communion. What the casual passerby would not have understood, if he was inspired or invited to attend the Mass that Sunday, would be the 10-year-history of the Holy Spirit tenderly transforming the heart of this once very pagan family towards the truth about itself and God; He would not have understood the joy of this converted father looking on as his first ’cradle catholic’ (of three) was received amid ‘a cloud of witnesses’ into the safe harbor of eternal grace and salvation that is the Most Holy Eucharist (see: John 6:54); He would not have noticed our Priest (Father Harry) procuring this blessing of God, as only a Priest can, in Persona Christi; He would not have known the patient love beforehand of the true evangelist and catechist (C. Miller) as she guided along our valley her little flock of four children up into the pure air atop the highest mountain of religous education. (Note: Isaiah 52:7 speaks well of her here); No less either, would he be able to dicipher the connection of previous first communicants by linking their more famous and illustrious Catholic vocations in history with the plan of God for their lives and the Church in the world under divine communication within the Most Sacred Species–Francis, Augustine, Kolbe, Therese, Stein, Theresa, Dominic, Montfort, Pio, Paulus, Corapi, come to mind; No, He would not have understood what he witnessed in all the spiritual works of the Body of Christ during the Sacrifice of the Mass, the most holy action on earth. Yet, the passerby himself would know interiorly by the mysterious presence of such love before him that he too was in need of all these things his heart yearned for, while still yet, his mind could not accept. It is here I believe, and know, that the invisible God reveals Himself most powerfully, inspiring repentance and conversion through the attraction of love–His invisible acts of love working within the inward life of the man in union with our visible signs of love and action in the presence and person of the outward man.

OUR NEED TO EVANGELIZE IN THIS TROUBLED AGE

As we approach the readings of the Mass this Sunday proclaiming the Ascension of Our Lord into heaven, and carry them with us throughout the week, they must always remind us of the evangelization of nations begun in Jerusalem over 2000 years ago. The Church, as we are taught according to the Second Vatican Council Decree Ad Gentes, ‘…is driven by the inner necessity of her own catholicity, and obeying the mandate of her Founder (cf. Mark 16:16), strives ever to proclaim the Gospel to all men.’

Of course, to determine how our proclamation is proceeding, we must constantly evaluate our catholicity and obedience to the mandate within ourselves, within the Church, and with the clear view of the state of the world’s salvation in mind–including our own community of Cave Junction. And we do this–or should–in light of the words of the Word of God Himself–‘Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.’ These words, both hopeful and dire, are the measure of our necessity to be fishers of men in the world.

Personal Evangelization

In contemplating my own obedience to the divine mandate, I find myself lacking in many areas of my life and considerable obstacles are before me which would seek to inhibit, or demoralize completely, my will to reorientate my life wholly in the service of the Gospel and its mission according to my vocation. But, I am not alone, as the Holy Script attests, and I shall wait on the Lord to deliver me from all these. Please pray for my intentions.

What the Church Needs to Evangelize Effectively, and Our Duty to Help

When I turn my attention to evaluating the Church of today, (and if you pray), you will find as I did, that her needs and difficulties are many and that my evaluation is true, as they come from a most reliable source:

  • With holy valor, we must pronouce and defend all the truths of the Catholic faith, for they find their origin in Absolute Truth.

  • The Gospel must be proclaimed in the integrity of its full truth, and that, in accord with its Divine Author as interpreted by His teaching magisterium.

  • Heresy disguised as truth is dangerous to souls, and many leave the true Church of God because of it, there is a need to defend the truth of the way.

  • Apostasy is real, and so is the reality of infidelity within the Church, the light of faith needs to guide us, and the Glory of Christ Crucified become our zeal.

  • The second evangelization proposed often by Pope John Paul II during his papacy was not the simple inspiration from the heart of a good-willed man, but was, and remains in this very moment, a serious declaration of need for both the Church and the World coming from God–as both the Church and the world are in need of evangelization.

Our Mission to Evangelize the Community of Cave Junction

In my study of ‘The Last Confession’ of St. Patrick, which, scholars agree was written by the saint himself, I was surprised by the many similarities and difficulties the Church of his day shared with that of our own today in leading people to Jesus Christ and His Church. Paganism, unbelief, controversies between brethren, belief and practice of human sacrifice (see: abortion), personal slavery, sin etc… But also, within all this, I find the mystical reality and truth of our faith working through the Spirit in directing Patrick’s steps despite his own ignorance, manifold imprisonments, and long odds and distance to accomplish God’s will within his life. Deep prayer proves this continues today within our lives and the Church of God, and still, the gates of hell have not prevailed.

I will close this post by listing some evangelizing needs for the local  Church and paths I perceive are needed within our community of Cave Junction. I’m also most interested in learning of your own perceived needs and inspirations in the area of Catholic evangelization, as well as, how you share your faith with other’s now in the valley… To leave a comment, click the comment field up above next to the date of this post, below the highlighted title.

A Mission Plan to Evangelize the Valley?

  • I would like see, be a part of, and commit myself towards the building up of a fresh impulse for Catholic evangelization in the Valley. To my knowledge, the only organized outreach of evangelization flowing forth from the Mission is the Legion of Mary. (If I’m in error here, please correct me. I’m truly interested in learning more.).

  • I would like to see the full force of our talents i.e. vocations/ministries arrayed in one mind and one purpose for effective evangelization, and in such a way, that each talent will benefit from the other, so that Catholic conversion will not only occur, but, will blossom throughout the valley.

  • I would like to see a series of mission meetings be formed in order to consider, promote, and coordinate the establishment of a mission evangelization plan.

If you feel inspired with the same notion or have entertained the same thought in the past, I would like to know…

Pray Brethren…
